World’s Greatest Shave

A few weeks ago, some of our brave residents took part in the World’s Greatest Shave to help raise money and awareness for the Leukaemia Foundation.

We had 9 residents take part, with much of the College community coming down to the quad to support them during the big event. They raised $3,500 in total, which is an astounding achievement: enough to house 44 families who have needed to urgently relocate for treatment for a night.

Ciara Franklin, a College Fresher, and Great Southern Grammar Alumni, was the driving force behind this event. She says that she was very motivated to organise this event, as “giving back to the community and good causes has always been very important” to her. She reflected back on her previous participation in the World’s Greatest Shave event, recalling that “in Junior School, she decided that she would like to shave her head in Year 12 for the World’s Greatest Shave after watching a young family member undergo treatment for Leukaemia– and so she did!”

Ciara noted that “having a part in organising the World’s Greatest Shave for her school fuelled her passion for promoting and raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation, a passion which she brought with her to college.” She thanks College community representative, Cooper Warwick, and the rest of the college community for getting behind the event and supporting her.

Ciara says that the highlight of the event for her was “watching everyone come together on the day of the big shave to cheer one another on.” She explained that this was such a special experience for her because she got to “watch real change happen.” She explained that what made the event especially worthwhile was “last minute donations, pledges to take part next year, and awareness of what so many Australians battle with everyday.”

It’s events like these that truly show the strength of St George’s College spirit, and passion for helping the community. We can’t wait for the World’s Greatest Shave again next year!
