Continuing Family Traditions

As a fresher, I’ve only been at St George’s for about four months. But I’ve always been aware of the legacy the College holds. My parents, along with many family friends and relatives also lived at St George’s. So going into my first year, I knew that St George’s would provide me with a vibrant and supportive community that would stay with me for life. Even today, Mum and Dad say their closest friends are the ones they made at St George’s.

Mum and Dad didn’t attend College at the same time but their shared experience as Georgians played a big part on the relationship. They often reminisce about their time here. And one of the common highlights that’s always been mentioned to me is the sense of community that was instilled in residents.

One thing that stood out to Mum was the dining hall. Whilst an inherently beautiful building, it was also the site for the beginning of many friendships. Unspoken rules include offering water to others before yourself, filling up tables and leaving no resident alone. These rules were the catalyst for new conversations with others and helped create a close community. Although newer rules have been added, such as leaving phones outside, dining hall traditions have stood the test of time and continue to uphold the values that St George’s promotes to its residents. Undoubtedly, the best dining atmosphere across College Row.

My parents say some of their best memories were from different College events such as Croquet Day and the College Ball. The highly developed environment and community in all facets of student life, as well as the joy and tradition that are present everywhere at St George's, are further reasons why my parents believe St George's to be the best college.

According to Mum and Dad, the biggest difference since their time here, is the additional accommodation of newer wings. Yet, the key elements of the original buildings stand strong, including a sense of tradition that is unmatched. I’m excited to create my own memories here and being a part of the Georgian community for life.
